The year 2020 left a lot to be desired in terms of freedom and fleeting moments of enjoyment. My name is Sarah Luxx and I am the fashion designer for this website. I remember clearly stealing my freedom during brisk early morning walks smiling to myself like I was getting away with a crime when I could slip off my mask and gulp in gusts of fresh air before returning to my cramped one room apartment in Wakefield.

These walks became so routine that I started to walk holes into my leggings. Literally! Eventually, I needed more so I started my consumer search for leggings that would stretch enough to fit properly on my 5'9" frame up over my big bottom without being see through and without rolling down when I'm walking, Everything I found was a shot in the dark on fit AND forced me to settle for dark because every pair was black!

Unable to party and hang out, I started to create looks I wanted to wear but just weren't available for big women like me. It was like the industry was telling me to be ashamed of myself and cover up in black.  Once I thought I could revolutionize the leggings industry, my business begun as BBW Baddie Apparel and I took it to countless NYC/NJ pop up shops to get the word out.  They sold well but I learned that a lot of women drank the "wear black and hide" Kool-Aid and my designs remarkably sold the best with women no larger than an XL.  

 

I didn't give up though. I kept designing and branched out to joggers and hoodies and changed the name to the more inclusive S-L Sportswear but I wanted my audience to change from the common consumer to people who loved limelight and popularity, people who wouldn't be afraid to pop out and set trends in styles no one has seen before. Every dime I could save went into these endeavors.

 

Here I am on the left in front of my showcase at MAGIC NYC, the city's largest fashion trade show. After that I was accepted to Runway 7 and started to pour all my savings into that excursion. Then, I got an email from Flying Solo inviting me to apply to be a member.  It was like God brought my dreams to my doorstep. Flying Solo is an exclusive group of independent fashion designers with a platform to sell to celebrity buyers and the elite.  They accepted my designs and named us S-L NYC so I went with it and bought a domain with that name, changed the name on all social media and so the journey continues.  January 2024, S-L NYC features in the Flying Solo, Paris flagship store.
